Injectable hyaluronic acid is mainly used in aesthetic medicine for skin rejuvenation, volume increase, and wrinkle reduction. It is an injectable filler that mimics the body’s natural hyaluronic, providing hydration and elasticity to the skin.
Uses of Injectable Hyaluronic Acid:
-
Anti-Aging & Wrinkle Filling:
It is used to fill and smooth wrinkles (e.g. nasolabial folds, smoker’s wrinkles on the upper lip, crow’s feet) and to restore the lost volume of the face. -
Volume Increase:
Face: Applied for volume and shape to the lips, enhances the cheekbones, face contour, and the chin. -
Imperfection Correction:
It can improve imperfections on the nose or correct shape balance (liquid rhinoplasty). -
Hydration and Improvement of Skin Texture:
It is used in treatments such as mesotherapy for deep hydration or treatments such as skin booster for skin glow.
Duration and Results:
The duration of injectable hyaluronic acid depends on various factors such as the material type, the application area, and the metabolism of the individual.
Results are immediate and last from 6 to 18 months.
The duration of the results may be reduced if someone has a high metabolism rate, smokes, is frequently exposed to the sun, or does intense exercise. On the contrary, proper hydration and the use of sunscreen can prolong the results.
Side Effects and Contraindications
Injectable hyaluronic acid is considered safe; however, there may be some side effects such as:
-
Mild swelling at the application area
-
Redness
-
Bruising
Which disappear in a few days. In rare cases, more serious complications, such as allergic reactions, may occur, so it is important that it is applied by a specialized doctor.
Contraindications:
-
Allergy to hyaluronic acid
-
Autoimmune diseases (e.g., lupus, rheumatoid arthritis) as there may be an increased risk of reaction.
-
Blood coagulation disorders or anticoagulant medication drug use, which may increase the risk of bleeding or bruising.
-
Pregnancy and breast-feeding as there is not enough research on the safety of hyaluronic use in these cases.
Precautions:
After the infusion, it is recommended to avoid intense physical exercise for 24-48 hours, because it may increase swelling.
If there is a tendency to swelling or bruising, application of ice may be helpful. Aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., ibuprofen) should also be avoided for 2-3 days before therapy.
Avoid alcohol consumption for at least 24 hours prior to application as it may worsen any swelling or bruising.
Avoid excessive heat (e.g., solarium, sauna, sun therapy) for a few days.
